The truck pulls into the hospital parking lot, but Tavin passes the entrance to the Emergency Room.

“Tavin, where are you going? I told you to drop me off at the door.”

He shakes his head. “I’m going in with you.”

“Tavin. She’s my mother and my responsibility. I don’t want you here.” I can feel my eyes starting to tear up.

“Stop, Amanda. I’m not letting you go in there alone. I’m here for you. And I’m not leaving.”

“Yes, you are. Take me to the entrance now. We’re wasting time.”

Tavin sighs and drives the truck back to the hospital entrance.

I get out and take off walking. I’m not in the mood to argue with him.

I’m shaking by the time I get to the door. Trying to keep the tears from overflowing and taking over. By the time I reach the nurse’s station, I’m more in control.

“Amanda Barnback to see her mother, Susanne Barnback.”

A woman approaches me from behind. “I’m Nurse Miller. Come this way.”

I talk fast as I follow. “Can you tell me what happened?”

The nurse stops in front of a closed door and turns to face me. “She fell. Broke her hip in two places. She’ll need surgery. But her potassium levels are too low. We have her comfortable for now. The doctor’s hoping that her blood work is better in the morning. He can’t put the surgery off for too long.”

“I’m a realtor. I had to leave her alone to show a property.” I exhale heavily. Hating how the lie tastes in my mouth.

The nurse interrupts me. “Not my business. She’s heavily sedated and will probably sleep until morning. Keep your visit short. She’ll be more alert before the surgery in the morning. And the doctor will want to talk to you before he begins.”

I nod. “What time should I arrive in the morning?”

“They’ll do her blood work just after four. If it’s within the normal range, they’ll want to take her in first which means a seven a.m. start. Be here by six to talk to the doctor beforehand.”

I watch the nurse walk away. Then I push my mom’s hospital room door open and walk in.

My mom is lying in a bed in the center of the room. A machine is beeping beside her as it monitors her heart. She looks peaceful. Like she’s resting well. She’s been complaining about not getting any sleep lately. Maybe a trip to the hospital was what she needed. She doesn’t look like anything is wrong with her. And I half expect her to start arguing with me.

I slide the chair closer to the bed and take her hand. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there when you fell, Mom. Work keeps me busy. And your medical bills are never-ending. I’ll figure out a way to work from home more.”

Beep. She doesn’t move.

“I’ll bring some of your things when I come back in the morning. The robe you like and your toothbrush. The pink shower gel too. The last time you were here, you said that the one they gave you dried out your skin.
